It may be England’s smallest county but don’t be fooled, Rutland promises big surprises.

Looking at renting or buying a house in Rutland? You’d be hard-pushed to find a nicer place to live. This picturesque, ‘chocolate box’ is known for its charming market towns and unspoilt villages, Rutland offers fresh air, glorious countryside, big skies, sailing, stunning and unique properties, and great schools. Plus with the cities of Leicester and Peterborough only a 20-minute drive away you really can have the best of both worlds; relaxed country-living with bustling city perks just a stone’s throw away. The county’s moto is ‘Multum in Parvo’, meaning ‘Much in little’, named as ‘Britain’s best rural place to live’ in 2015 by Halifax, this moto couldn’t be more apt.

Out and about

There are a plethora of things to do and enjoy in Rutland, especially if you enjoy the great outdoors. Visit Rutland water, the playground of the East Midlands, where outdoor sports are well catered for. Enjoy a walk or bike ride around the man-made lake, enjoy a spot of golf or some fishing – not to mention the huge choice of watersports available. If you enjoy things at a slightly slower pace, simply enjoy the stunning views and see what wildlife you can spot.

If history and really drinking in your surroundings is more to your taste, you will be spoilt for choice with the many grand and breathtaking stately homes dotted around the Rutland border; Burghley House, Grimsthorpe Castle, Belton House, and Belvoir Castle are all real gems.

A passion for food

In Rutland, food is a passion (Melton Mowbray pork pie, anyone?). It’s renowned and justly proud of its farming and agricultural roots. It’s thanks to this pride that there is no shortage of high-quality pubs and restaurants to discover, each serving delicious top-quality food, prepared using the finest local produce. The George in Stamford, Hambleton Hall, and The Olive Branch in Clipsham (both proud owners of Michelin Stars) are not to be missed.
